Florida’s Primary System:

Florida has Closed Primary Elections.  This means that only voters who are registered members of political parties may vote for their respective party's candidates in a primary election. Voters without party affiliation or with minor party affiliations are not eligible to vote for major party candidates in a primary election.

However, many races in Leon County are nonpartisan. These races include county judge, school board, county commissioner, city commissioner, Supervisor of Elections, and local referendum questions.  Any registered voter who is otherwise eligible to vote on these races may vote on them regardless of party affiliation.

If all candidates have the same party affiliation and the winner will have no opposition in the general election, all qualified voters, regardless of party affiliation, may vote in the primary election for that office. This is known as a Universal Primary Contest.

All otherwise eligible voters may vote on all races in a General Election.
