The Fleet Management Division provides repair and maintenance services for 628 vehicles and
equipment owned and operated by Leon County. Additionally, vehicles owned by three
Constitutional Officers receive the majority of their repairs and maintenance services from this
division as well. The replacement of vehicles and equipment, development of specifications
before purchase, and the submission of requisitions for procurement represent other
functions. In the Fleet Division's 2006-2007 Budget Request, it includes
the replacement of three Jeep Cherokees with Ford Escape Hybrids. The Jeep
averages 19 MPG while the Escape Hybrid averages 31 MPG. This is a 61%
increase in gas mileage.
The responsibility for procurement and dispensing of gasoline, diesel fuel, and oil
products is a very integral role of this
division. In addition to the Board of County Commissioners' (BCC) vehicles and equipment, the
Fleet Management refueling site serves as a remote refueling station for the Leon County
Sheriff's Department and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The
Fleet Division is currently pilot testing a bio-diesel fuel mixture of 80%
petroleum and 20% biomass in three of the heavy-duty trucks. Bio-diesel is
a clean burning fuel, produced from domestic, renewable sources (vegetable oil,
soybeans, corn and other crops).
An item particularly noteworthy is the fact that all fleet maintenance related services are
performed with only ten staff members. Since 1981 when the Fleet Management Division was
created, staffing has been reduced approximately 39.4 percent. During the same time period, the
County's fleet has increased approximately 70.6 percent.
