The Board of County Commissioners, along side leaders of the
Department of Children and Families, Second Judicial Circuit
Judge Jonathan Sjostrom, community officials and activists
held a special press conference on June 10 to discuss the
grant that will fund programs to assist people with mental
illness in the Leon County court system.
The grant will be implemented over three years for a total
of $792,624. Funding will include training for local law
enforcement on how to respond to mental health crises, a
court designated specifically for mentally ill offenders,
and case management designed to reduce the recidivism rates
and increase defendants’ abilities to live on their own
outside the jail. The new matching grant program encourages
partnerships among state, local and private organizations to
collectively address the need for treatment of individuals
in Florida’s county jails and state prisons.
The grants are a collaborative effort between state and
local governments and advocacy organizations including the
Florida Substance Abuse and Mental Health Corporation Board,
Florida Peer Network, Florida Partners in Crisis, Florida
Association of Counties, the Department of Corrections, the
Department of Juvenile Justice, the Department of Elder
Affairs, the State Courts Administrator and the Department
of Children and Families.
