The 2008 hurricane season began Sunday, June 1, and lasts
through the end of November. Representatives from the
Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross, the Leon
County Board of County Commissioners, the Leon County
Sheriffs Office, the Leon County Division of Emergency
Management, and the National Weather Service gathered on
Friday, May 30, to emphasize the importance of hurricane
preparedness.
Residents are encouraged to develop hurricane plans using
the 2008 Hurricane Survival Guide. More than 165,000 copies
of the new guide were distributed in weekly and daily
newspapers in the Capital Area, including the Tallahassee
Democrat. The Survival Guide assists people in making that
first important decision - whether to stay or go - based on
their individual risk factors, while also showing citizens
how to prepare for both before and after the storm. The
information can also be found on the user-friendly Web site,
www.haveahurricaneplan.com.
